The dark ‘eyes’ are created with pumice gel. I layer this on the canvas and it sets hard and rough. I like the texture; makes it more tree like.

Chinese Red Birch

The Chinese red birch is one of the most exquisite birches. It’s grown for its fabulous peeling trunks. The mature trees will shed large sheets of pinkish beige paper-like bark.

I took inspiration from a pair of birch trees that I saw in Norway. I liked their spindly branches and the few leaves they’d produced, due to the density of the growth around them.
